ARCHITECTURE OF DEATH

Redesigning the crematorium experience in India

Background

This project was my final year undergraduate Design Dissertation & Thesis guided by Ar. Mridula Pillai-Gudekar.

My inclination to solve urban issues affecting human psyche and cultural practices led me to choose this problem statement. My project looked into the current neglected scenario of crematoriums in India and redefining it into a place that helps the users gain solace.

Physical Prototype of the Design

Most of the elements in the prototype were hand-cut while other complex forms were created using laser cutting and 3D printing methods. The prototype helped me understand the human to space proportions, scalability, light, and form of my design, thus allowing me to make informed design decisions.
